Popular Nigerian activist VeryDarkMan has been left devastated following the tragic death of a young fish vendor known as “Fish Magnet,” who was reportedly kidnapped and murdered before he could fulfill a heartfelt promise to the activist.
In an emotional video shared on Instagram, VeryDarkMan fought back tears as he revealed how the young entrepreneur had planned to gift him a selection of smoked fish out of appreciation for his activism and recent visit to Onitsha, Anambra State, where he had shown support for local traders.
Fish Magnet, in a video he recorded before his death, had expressed excitement about the gesture, saying:
“It will give me more joy to give these fish to VeryDarkMan than to sell them. Just as a way of appreciating him for all the good he’s doing in Nigeria and for coming to Onitsha, Anambra State, to support traders. Please help me tag him so I can get these fish across.”
Tragically, that gift would never be delivered.
“Unfortunately, he will not be able to give me that fish because he was kidnapped and killed… What was his offence? If you check his page, all he does is promote his business. That’s all,” a visibly shaken VeryDarkMan said.
To further show the connection they had, the activist shared screenshots of their chat from June, showing Fish Magnet’s excitement to surprise him. One of the messages read:
“Big brother, please, it will be an honor to get this fish across to you. It’s already in the oven.”
The incident has brought renewed attention to Nigeria’s worsening security crisis, especially in Anambra State. VeryDarkMan directly called out Governor Charles Soludo, questioning the level of protection offered to ordinary citizens.

“Governor Soludo, your kids are abroad. If this country wasn’t safe, you wouldn’t send them there. What hope do we have in Nigeria when entrepreneurs are killed just for trying to do business?”
He also announced plans to hold a candlelight vigil in honor of Fish Magnet, proposing tentative dates and urging supporters to join:
“Maybe on the 3rd or 4th, we’ll hold a candlelight for him. As long as it doesn’t clash with the sit-at-home order, let’s honor him and highlight the growing insecurity. Every day it’s farmers in Benue or Jos. It’s becoming normal—too normal.”
In a powerful closing message aimed at Nigerian youth, VeryDarkMan called for collective awareness and action on the country’s security situation:
“We can’t keep ignoring insecurity. The sooner we start taking it seriously, the better for all of us.”
The story has since gone viral, with thousands expressing sorrow and outrage online. Many described the death of Fish Magnet as a heartbreaking reminder of the growing dangers faced by hardworking Nigerians whose only “crime” is trying to survive and show kindness.
