The United Kingdom UK has officially opened applications for its 2025–2026 scholarship programmes, offering fully and partially funded opportunities for international students to study across leading British universities.
The scholarships, which include the prestigious Chevening, Commonwealth, and GREAT scholarships, aim to attract exceptional students from developing and Commonwealth countries, including Nigeria and other African nations. Applicants are encouraged to apply early as competition remains intense and deadlines vary by programme.
According to the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), the initiative underscores the country’s commitment to investing in global education partnerships and nurturing future leaders who will contribute to positive change in their home countries.
“Education is at the heart of our global engagement. Through these scholarships, we are empowering talented individuals with the skills and networks needed to address today’s global challenges,” an FCDO spokesperson said.
The Chevening Scholarship, funded by the UK government, offers full financial support for a one-year master’s degree in any field at any UK university. It covers tuition, living expenses, travel costs, and visa fees. Applicants must demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential, and a commitment to return home to contribute to national development.
The Commonwealth Scholarship, jointly funded by the UK Department for Education and participating universities, is designed for students from Commonwealth countries pursuing postgraduate studies in fields such as public health, technology, climate change, and education.
Additionally, the GREAT Scholarships—a partnership between the UK Government and the British Council—provide partial funding for students from select countries, focusing on innovation, sustainable development, and social impact.
The British Council announced that more than 1,500 awards are available for the 2025–2026 academic year, covering a wide range of disciplines, including science, engineering, arts, business, and social sciences.
“We encourage applicants to apply early and carefully review eligibility criteria. Each programme has specific requirements and deadlines,” said Sharon Wicks, Director of Education at the British Council.
Interested candidates can apply through the official scholarship portals, where they must submit academic transcripts, reference letters, personal statements, and proof of English language proficiency. Shortlisted applicants may also be invited for interviews or virtual assessments.
