President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially renamed the University of Maiduguri as Muhammadu Buhari University, in honour of the late former President who passed away on July 13, 2025.
The announcement was made during a special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, convened to pay tribute to President Buhari. The renaming was met with applause from council members, including ministers who served in Buhari’s administration and his son, Yusuf Buhari, who was also present.

“Before we take the prayers in honour of his memory, with this special session of the Federal Executive Council (expanded), can we adopt the naming of the University of Maiduguri with a new name — Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri,” Tinubu declared, prompting a standing ovation from attendees.
Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga confirmed the development in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), writing:
“President Tinubu renames University of Maiduguri as MUHAMMADU Buhari University. President Tinubu announced the honour at the session of tributes of the Federal Executive Council to his late predecessor.”
