President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mourned the death of retired Major General Abdullahi Mohammed Adangba, a former Chief of Staff to Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, and one-time National Security Adviser. General Mohammed passed away at the age of 86.
Announcing the loss in a statement on Wednesday, President Tinubu described the late military officer as a disciplined, loyal, and patriotic statesman who made foundational contributions to Nigeria’s security and governance systems. The President commiserated with the Mohammed family, the government and people of Kwara State, and the Nigerian Armed Forces.
General Mohammed played a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s intelligence and security architecture, particularly in the formation of the National Security Organisation (NSO), which later evolved into key intelligence institutions including the State Security Service (SSS), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), and Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA). He also served as Military Governor of the defunct Benue-Plateau State from 1975 to 1976.

“He was a man of exemplary character, who combined the precision of a soldier with the prudence of a statesman. His years in the State House were marked by humility, efficiency, and unwavering commitment to the Nigerian project,” President Tinubu stated.
The President prayed for the repose of the late general’s soul and strength for the family and nation to bear the loss, describing him as a “distinguished son of Nigeria whose legacy of service will continue to inspire generations.”
