President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday received the leadership of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, calling on professional accountants to play a more active role in ensuring transparency, accountability, and fiscal discipline across all sectors of the economy.

The delegation, led by ICAN President Haruna Yahaya, included the Vice President Queensley Seghosime, Registrar Lanre Olasunkanmi, and other council members. They were joined by the President of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC), Jean Bouquot, as well as Jigawa State Governor Umaru Namadi, Kogi State Governor Ahmed Ododo, and the Accountant-General of the Federation, Shamseldeen Ogunjimi.

Welcoming the team, President Tinubu acknowledged the strategic role accountants play in driving financial integrity and stability within both the public and private sectors. He emphasized that his administration’s ongoing economic reforms—particularly those targeting fiscal consolidation, prudent spending, and revenue generation—require the professional input of credible institutions such as ICAN.

“Nigeria’s future depends on sound financial management and transparent accounting practices,” the President said. “We need professionals who will uphold integrity and discipline in public finance, ensuring that every naira works for the people.”

He urged ICAN to strengthen its advocacy for ethics and global best practices, noting that accountability must begin with professionals who serve as custodians of financial records.

ICAN President Haruna Yahaya commended the Tinubu administration for its ongoing reforms, describing them as bold and necessary for national growth. He assured the President of ICAN’s readiness to partner with government institutions to enhance financial reporting standards, promote fiscal transparency, and support the training of accountants in both public and private sectors.

The visiting IFAC President, Jean Bouquot, expressed delight at Nigeria’s leadership role in Africa’s accounting community and pledged global collaboration to strengthen professional standards and institutional capacity in the country.

Also in attendance were top government officials and industry stakeholders who underscored the need for synergy between policymakers and accounting professionals to achieve national development goals.

Photographs from the meeting showed President Tinubu in warm discussions with the ICAN delegation, highlighting his administration’s ongoing engagement with key professional bodies committed to Nigeria’s economic transformation.
