JAMB uncovers 1,665 fake A-level results during DE registration

0

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board said it uncovered at least 1,665 fake A’level results during the 2023 Direct Entry registration exercise.

The board also said the A’level results verification regime was characterised by corruption associated with the system.

The Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, disclosed these when he received the leadership of the National Association of Nigeria Colleges of Education Students in his office on Tuesday in Abuja.

He said, “Out of this figure, 397 were from Colleges of Education, 453 were university diplomas, and the rest were other A’level certificates.

It should be of grave concern if no one respects the certificate one is holding; hence, there is a need to safeguard the integrity of A’level certificates that are used to secure admission through measures that would stand the test of time.”

The registrar recalled that in the past when a candidate applied for DE, the board would simply ask awarding institutions to do the necessary screening and due diligence.

He stated that JAMB was shocked by the revelations from Bayero University, Kano, where out of the 148 Direct Entry applications to the institution, only six of the certificates forwarded for processing were genuine.

The registrar added that it was the discovery of the fraud that prompted the meeting of critical stakeholders, who met to chart ways of combating the menace.

Part of the measures suggested, he said, was the constitution of an A’level result verification task force as well as the creation of a common platform for the verification of A’level results and certificates. He said the platform was reliable and user-friendly, as it only takes five minutes to verify any given certificate.

Oloyede also disclosed that, to underscore the importance attached to the exercise, the board has put in place a “No verification, No admission” policy.

While listing 15 institutions that have not sufficiently complied with verification requests from the board, he stated that the affected institutions, with more than 20 unverified candidates, would have to pre-verify candidates applying with their certificates before they could complete their DE registration process.

According to the registrar, the modification to the ongoing DE registration is that candidates could go ahead and register while the school verifies them on the back end.

He, however, declared that the 15 institutions, which were yet to fully comply, would have to pre-verify holders of their certificates before they complete their DE registration.

Earlier, the NANCES President, Eegunjobi Samuel, commended the work the registrar is doing, particularly in terms of restoring sanity, integrity, and credibility in the nation’s examination and admission processes.

He disclosed that the association was at the JAMB nqtional headquarters to present complaints from their members about the seemingly intractable challenges they are having in the ongoing 2024 DE registration as well as ask for more DE registration centres.

A fire outbreak that began in the early hours of Tuesday engulfed several shops at Owode Market in Offa, Kwara State.

A video of the incident seen by SaharaReporters captured the moment some of the shop owners were mourning as they watched their properties destroyed by the fire.

“This light is too much. This is not caused by NEPA (electricity). Maybe some people were cooking and the fire started from there because this light is much,” one of the traders said in the video.

A source from the town on Tuesday morning said the fire was eventually quenched by the personnel of Federal Fire Service and Kwara State Fire Service.

The source added that no fewer than five shops were affected by the inferno.

“The authorities are still assessing the situation, but personally, I know at least five shops were affected. The worth of goods and properties destroyed can’t be said now until the assessment finishes.

“There are also several claims as to the cause of the fire until we wait for the fire service to release their statement on it,” the source said.

Meanwhile, barely eight months ago, there was a report about a midnight fire razed a residential building in the town and destroyed property worth N6.5m.

The incident that occurred at about 1:05am at Kowope compound, Olorunkuse area, Offa, affected a two- bedroom flat and four shops.

‘You’re hunted by ghost’ — Daniel Bwala tackles Peter Obi over threat to dump LP

A former spokesman of the Atiku-Okowa presidential campaign council, Daniel Bwala has tackled the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, saying he is being hunted by a ghost he created.

Bwala stated this in a statement via his official X handle on Tuesday.

The former spokesperson was reacting to Obi’s latest threat to jump the LP before the 2027 general elections.

Recall that Obi had vowed “not to die” with the party, saying he would rather leave if the issues can’t be resolved.

LP has been faced with a long-running leadership crisis between Lamidi Apapa and Julius Abure.

The party is also grappling with an ownership crisis following claims by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC.

But, in his reaction to Obi, Bwala described Obi as a quagmire because the Social Democratic Party he intends to join has no automatic ticket for him.

Bwala stated, “BREAKING NEWS: The presidential candidate of @NgLabour at the 2023 elections @PeterObi is hunted by a ghost that he created. Sensing the obvious in Labour Party to the effect that there is no automatic ticket, he has therefore threatened that if the party would not conform, he will leave.

“The Social Democratic Party, which he hopes to use the platform when the need arises, doesn’t give automatic tickets. Peter Obi feared that he may likely not win delegate election because he is not a grassroot politician, he is presently in a quagmire.

“A former president is reported to be having it very difficult convincing nation’s statesmen to support the move because they prefer to give @officialABAT his due time to reform Nigeria.

He added, “Peter Obi was reported as being advised immediately to start a campaign and woo the core northern Nigeria as well as the Muslim communities across the nation to disprove the notion that he uses identity politics.

“He has since commenced the exercise, but it is feared that the foreign media which packaged him in the last election consider him as too difficult to re-brand based on analytics on his chances.

“His base called the ‘Obedient’ people made it clear to him that they would not accept any merger that will extinguish his presidential bid. He is between the devil and deep blue sea,” he said.

Liverpool are now favourites to win the Premier League title

Former Man Utd captain Keane says Liverpool’s attack will give them an edge in the run-in; Jurgen Klopp’s side two points clear of Arsenal; Gary Neville picks out Liverpool’s away game at Man Utd next Sunday – live on Sky – as key but warns Man City could win their remaining nine games.

Those results mean Liverpool have a cushion on second-placed Arsenal, with the gap to City in third now three points.

Assessing the race for the crown with nine games to play, Keane said: “I think Liverpool, I’d have them favourites. Arsenal second favourites with their goal difference. City with their injuries and the strain of everything – Champions League coming up, same as Arsenal – [third favourites].

Every time I watch Liverpool, we can look at one or two faults they might have, but they get so many chances every game, they’re going to score lots of goals.

I’ve said Man City [previously] but what I’ve seen recently, I’m going to go with Liverpool.”

Keane’s fellow Sky Sports pundit and former Man Utd team-mate Gary Neville is standing by his prediction Arsenal will come through and take the title but believes Liverpool have a chance to build up real momentum if they can beat Sheffield United and then United at Old Trafford in the coming week.

We knew before the international break who was in form,” he said. “Arsenal were in the best form. Liverpool were hanging on a little bit towards the end. Arsenal’s performance levels were really high. What happens in the next week is critical because you’re going to need good form going into that run-in.

I said Arsenal at the start of the season and I’m not going to shift now because I think all the teams are still in it.

But if Liverpool win at Old Trafford they’ll be in great shape mentally because you win a big game like that it has a massive impact on you. But it’s still a long way to go beyond that.”

He also said it would be foolish to rule out defending champions Man City, even though they have the most ground to make up.

“I genuinely think Man City could win all nine games,” he said. “That would be enough I think.”

However, ex-Arsenal winger Theo Walcott believes his former club may have shown a template of how to frustrate Pep Guardiola’s side.

“Arsenal showed today they can really grind results out, but I think a lot of teams will take a lot from Arsenal’s performance and it might affect how Man City play and get results now,” he said. “I can’t see City winning all the games.”
