The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has imposed heavy sanctions on Kano Pillars Football Club, including a ₦9.5 million fine, a three-point deduction, and a stadium ban, following violent incidents during a recent league match in Kano.
According to an official statement released by the NPFL on Monday, the punishment followed a detailed investigation into crowd disturbances and acts of aggression directed at match officials during the club’s home fixture at the Sani Abacha Stadium. The league body described the incident as “a gross violation of league regulations and a threat to the integrity of Nigerian football.”
The NPFL said Kano Pillars failed to provide adequate security, control their supporters, and ensure the safety of match officials, actions that contravened Articles 16.1, 16.2, and 17.1 of the league’s framework and rules.
“The NPFL Management views this behavior as unacceptable and detrimental to the image of the league. Clubs are expected to maintain order and uphold the spirit of fair play both on and off the pitch,” the statement read.

As part of the sanctions, the club will pay a ₦9.5 million fine, face an automatic deduction of three league points, and host their next three home matches behind closed doors. In addition, the club has been ordered to identify and produce the fans involved in the attack within seven days or risk further disciplinary measures.
The NPFL also warned that repeat offences by Kano Pillars or any other club could attract stricter penalties, including long-term stadium closures or expulsion from the league.
Reacting to the decision, Kano Pillars management expressed regret over the incident and appealed for calm among their supporters. The club’s spokesperson, Ali Baba Ibrahim, said the team would study the ruling and consider filing an appeal within the stipulated 48-hour window.
“We condemn the violence and are working with authorities to identify those responsible. Football must remain a game of peace and unity,” he stated.
The incident has sparked widespread debate among football fans and analysts, with many calling for tougher enforcement of safety regulations to protect players, referees, and spectators.
The NPFL reaffirmed its commitment to promoting discipline, professionalism, and fan safety across all league venues nationwide.
