The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has informed the Federal High Court in Abuja that the health condition of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, is not life-threatening and does not prevent him from standing trial.

The revelation came during Thursday’s court proceedings, where the medical association, represented by a panel of independent physicians, presented its official assessment following a court-ordered medical evaluation of Kanu.

According to the report submitted to Justice Binta Nyako, the NMA stated that after thorough medical examinations, Kanu was found to be in “stable condition” and fit enough to continue his legal proceedings. The doctors confirmed that while the IPOB leader has minor health challenges requiring regular monitoring, none pose an immediate risk to his life.

Dr. Yusuf Adebayo, who led the NMA’s medical delegation, told the court that Kanu’s condition is being adequately managed by medical personnel at the Department of State Services (DSS) facility, where he is being held. “Our findings show that the patient is receiving appropriate medical attention. His vital signs are normal, and his health does not warrant an interruption of trial,” Adebayo said.

The statement comes amid repeated claims by Kanu’s legal team that his deteriorating health requires urgent specialist care outside the DSS custody. They had previously urged the court to grant him bail or allow him access to his personal physicians abroad.

Lead counsel to Kanu, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), however, expressed reservations about the NMA’s report, insisting that the court should consider allowing an independent medical examination outside government supervision to ensure transparency.

Justice Nyako, while acknowledging the NMA’s submission, said the court would review all medical evidence before ruling on the defense’s renewed application for medical bail. She emphasized that the priority remains Kanu’s well-being and the integrity of the judicial process.

Nnamdi Kanu is facing multiple charges, including treasonable felony, incitement, and unlawful possession of firearms. His prolonged detention since 2021 has continued to draw both local and international attention, with human rights groups calling for a fair and transparent trial process.

The case has been adjourned to November 5 for further hearing.
