MultiChoice Group has achieved a major milestone for South African television after receiving four nominations at the 2025 International Emmy Awards the highest ever for any African country in a single year.

The nominations span multiple genres, showcasing the diversity and strength of South Africa’s creative industry. The nominated productions include Koek (Best Comedy), School Ties (Best Documentary), Catch Me a Killer (Best Drama Series), and Chasing the Sun 2 (Best Sports Documentary).

CEO of MultiChoice, Calvo Mawela, said the achievement “demonstrates the world-class quality of African storytelling” and reinforces the company’s commitment to empowering local creatives. “These nominations are not just for MultiChoice but for every African filmmaker working tirelessly to tell our stories to the world,” he stated.

South Africans have expressed pride online, calling it a “landmark moment” for the continent’s film and TV industry.
Entertainment analysts note that MultiChoice’s success at the Emmys comes amid rising global interest in African stories, particularly after Nigerian and Kenyan films gained international recognition in 2024.

The International Emmy Awards ceremony is set for November in New York, and industry watchers believe at least two of the South African nominees have strong chances of winning.

Regardless of the outcome, South Africa has already cemented its place among global storytelling powerhouses.
