Konga demands 60% earnings from Burna Boy, alleges song sampling

Veteran singer Lawal Olalekan Olumo, popularly known as Konga, has claimed he deserves 60 per cent of the earnings from Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, also popularly known as Burna Boy’s song, Update, claiming he was sampled without permission.

Speaking on the Hits Don’t Lie podcast, Konga alleged that Burna Boy did not contact him before or after using his material, even after he publicly addressed it months ago.

He compared the situation to that of Toni Braxton, whom Burna Boy had previously worked with on Last Last,  claiming that the singer agreed to give 60 per cent of the earnings for sampling her song.

“If Toni Braxton is having 60% royalty of Last Last, why can’t he do the same thing to come and meet me first, talk to me?” Konga queried.

Konga also shared that he has held back from taking legal action because of his respect for Burna Boy and his role in promoting African music globally.

He added that this is not the first time, claiming Burna Boy had earlier used his lyrics in the remix of Sungba with Asake.

According to him, when his earlier request for a collaboration on his song, Kabakaba, was ignored, he decided to respond differently, saying he has now chosen to sample Burna Boy’s work without permission.
