The Kebbi State Government has approved the sum of ₦4.05 billion for the rehabilitation and upgrade of seven general hospitals across the state as part of efforts to improve access to quality healthcare and strengthen the state’s medical infrastructure.
Governor Nasir Idris announced the approval following the State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi, saying the decision reflects his administration’s commitment to revitalizing the health sector and improving service delivery for citizens.
According to a statement from the Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Umar Kambaza, the hospitals earmarked for rehabilitation are located in Argungu, Zuru, Yauri, Jega, Bagudo, Kamba, and Bunza. The commissioner explained that the funds will cover structural renovation, provision of modern medical equipment, staff quarters, and improved power and water supply facilities.
“The approval is part of Governor Idris’s comprehensive plan to upgrade primary and secondary healthcare facilities across Kebbi State,” Kambaza said. “These hospitals will be remodeled to meet national health standards and to serve as referral centers for surrounding communities.”
He added that the rehabilitation work will be carried out in phases to ensure quality delivery, transparency, and efficient use of resources. Each project will also include training for health personnel to ensure effective use of new equipment and technologies being introduced.

Governor Idris, while emphasizing the importance of health to human capital development, said his administration will not relent until every Kebbi resident has access to affordable and reliable medical care.
“We are rebuilding our hospitals to restore public confidence in government health facilities,” he stated. “This investment is about saving lives, supporting families, and securing a healthier future for our people.”
The state government also hinted that the project aligns with its broader plan to attract development partners and federal support to strengthen healthcare financing and expand insurance coverage under the Kebbi State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KECHEMA).
Community leaders across the affected local government areas have lauded the move, describing it as timely and essential, especially for rural populations who rely heavily on public hospitals for medical services.
The rehabilitation is expected to commence immediately, with completion timelines ranging from six to twelve months, depending on the scale of work at each hospital.
