The Federal Government on Monday approved the temporary opening of a section of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway in Lagos to ease severe traffic congestion following a truck accident near the Chisco area of Lekki.

The accident, which occurred earlier in the day, caused significant gridlock across the Lekki corridor, disrupting movement for commuters and motorists heading towards Victoria Island and Ajah. In response, authorities authorised the use of the ongoing highway construction route to divert traffic and restore normal flow.

According to officials, the decision was taken as an emergency measure to reduce pressure on existing roads and ensure easier passage for stranded road users while accident recovery efforts continued.

The temporary opening is expected to bring relief to commuters who have faced long delays as a result of the incident. Government agencies and traffic personnel have been deployed to manage movement and guide motorists along the access route.

The Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, currently under construction, is a flagship infrastructure project designed to enhance connectivity, open up coastal economic corridors, and boost tourism and trade once completed.

Normal traffic flow had begun to improve by the afternoon, though motorists were advised to exercise caution and follow safety instructions while using the temporary diversion. Further updates on the reopening timeline and accident investigation are expected from relevant authorities.
