The Federal Government has announced the disbursement of ₦300 billion to more than eight million Nigerian households under its various social investment and poverty reduction programmes aimed at cushioning the effects of economic hardship across the country.
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, disclosed this on Monday in Abuja, noting that the funds were released through multiple intervention schemes designed to support vulnerable families, small-scale traders, and rural dwellers.
According to her, the initiative is part of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, which prioritizes social welfare, job creation, and economic empowerment for low-income citizens.
“So far, over eight million households have benefited directly from our social investment programmes. A total of ₦300 billion has been disbursed across different platforms, including conditional cash transfers, the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP), and the Youth Empowerment Initiative,” Edu said.

She explained that beneficiaries were carefully selected through verified national social registers to ensure transparency and prevent duplication, adding that digital payment systems were adopted to track disbursements and eliminate fraud.
Edu emphasized that the impact of the interventions is already being felt in rural communities, where thousands of families have gained access to financial support, microcredit, and skills development.
The minister also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustaining the programme and expanding coverage to reach more Nigerians in the coming months.
“Our target is to lift millions more out of poverty before the end of this administration. We are building sustainable systems that will empower citizens rather than create dependency,” she added.
The Federal Government’s social investment programme remains one of the largest poverty reduction initiatives in sub-Saharan Africa, aimed at achieving inclusive economic growth and improving living standards nationwide.
