Ex-Governor Gbenga Daniel Suspended by APC

The Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has suspended former Governor and serving senator representing Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel, over allegations of anti-party activities, refusal to cooperate with party investigations, and misconduct. The suspension, which is indefinite, was announced after a State Working Committee (SWC) meeting on Tuesday in Abeokuta.

According to the party, Senator Daniel and his associate, Hon. Kunle Folarin, were found guilty of gross misconduct following petitions filed by members of Wards 4 and 6 in Sagamu Local Government Area.

In a formal statement signed by the APC State Publicity Secretary, Tunde Oladunjoye, the party explained:

“After thorough review of the disciplinary committee’s report and all evidence submitted—including witness statements and relevant documents—the SWC concluded that both Senator Gbenga Daniel and Hon. Folarin deliberately ignored invitations to defend themselves. They also attempted to frustrate the process by intimidating party members who filed the initial petitions.”

Oladunjoye said the actions of both individuals violated the party’s constitution and threatened internal democracy.

“The decision to suspend Senator Daniel was not taken lightly. It is a necessary move to preserve party discipline and demonstrate that no member, regardless of status, is above the rules.”

Also speaking, the APC Chairman in Ogun State, Chief Yemi Sanusi, confirmed the ratification of the suspension:

“We must show that the party can enforce discipline and fairness. As a former governor and a serving senator, more is expected of Senator Daniel. Sadly, he failed to show accountability or loyalty to the party.”

In reaction, Senator Daniel’s media aide, Steve Oliyide, denied receiving any formal communication regarding the suspension, describing the move as politically motivated.

“We are just seeing the reports online like everyone else. Senator Daniel has not been officially notified. This is clearly an attempt to malign his character and silence his growing influence within Ogun APC,” Oliyide stated in a press release.

He added:

“The senator has always acted in the best interest of his constituents and the party. This decision smacks of internal power play, and we await proper communication before issuing a comprehensive response.”

Party insiders suggest the suspension is linked to Senator Daniel’s alleged tacit support for opposition candidates during the last local elections, a claim his team has consistently denied.

The development adds to the ongoing internal wrangling within the Ogun APC ahead of the 2027 general elections, with party leaders divided over control of the state’s political structure.

As of now, Senator Daniel remains suspended pending the outcome of further investigations by the party’s disciplinary bodies.
