Paris Saint-Germain have been ordered to pay their former forward, Kylian Mbappé, up to 61 million euros ($71.8 million) in unpaid wages and bonuses following a ruling by a French labour court on Tuesday.

The court ruled that the final sum, estimated at between 60 and 61 million euros, comprises 55 million euros in unpaid salary and around six million euros in holiday payments. Mbappé, 26, had initially been seeking more than 260 million euros from the club.

In a statement after the ruling, Mbappé’s lawyers said they “noted with satisfaction the decision given by the labour court,” adding that it “re-establishes a simple truth, even in the professional football industry, labour laws apply to everyone.”

Paris Saint-Germain acknowledged the judgment, saying they would comply while reserving the right to appeal. “Paris Saint-Germain has always acted in good faith and with integrity and will continue to do so. The club now looks to the future, built on unity and collective success, and wishes the player all the best for the next chapter of his career,” the club said.

PSG had counterclaimed, demanding 440 million euros from Mbappé, partly citing what they described as a failed 300 million-euro transfer to Saudi club Al Hilal in June 2023, which the player refused. Mbappé, however, maintained that he never agreed in 2023 to waive any payments owed to him.

The French captain also argued that PSG had applied the wrong legal classification to his contract, a claim that was rejected by the court.

Mbappé filed his complaint in June over his treatment at the start of the 2023–24 season, alleging he was sidelined and forced to train with players the club intended to offload after he declined to sign a new contract. He was excluded from PSG’s pre-season tour of Asia and missed the opening match of the season before later being reinstated following talks with the club. The practice has since been criticised in France, with the players’ union lodging a complaint last year.

Mbappé left PSG in June 2024 on a free transfer after his contract expired, ending a seven-year spell in which he scored 256 goals in 308 appearances. He joined Real Madrid, where he reportedly earns 30 million euros annually. PSG went on to win the UEFA Champions League for the first time last season following his departure.
