Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Adetona, buried in Ijebu Ode

The Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland in Ogun State, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has passed away at the age of 91.

His death occurred on Sunday, July 13, 2025, just hours after the demise of his longtime friend, former President Muhammadu Buhari. The twin losses have plunged Nigeria into mourning.

A member of the Ijebu royal family, Prince Adedoyin Alatishe, confirmed the monarch’s death in a post on X, writing in Yoruba: “Baami Ogbagba agbatewole 💔. Erin wo. Omo anikilaya saagbu,” a poetic tribute expressing deep sorrow.

The revered monarch, who passed away at the age of 91, was interred on Monday according to traditional rites in a solemn ceremony attended by dignitaries, royal family members, and high chiefs of the Ijebu Traditional Council.

Other dignitaries at the burial ceremony include the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun; former governor Otuna Gbenga Daniel; former Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo; Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu; billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote and Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as Ki D Ultimate.

Oba Adetona, who mounted the throne in 1960, was one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning traditional rulers. For over six decades, he served as a revered symbol of tradition, progress, and stability in Ogun State and beyond.

Oba Adetona’s reign was widely celebrated for bringing modernisation to the traditional institution while preserving the cultural identity of the Ijebu people.

Condolences have begun pouring in from across Nigeria as the nation mourns the passing of a royal icon whose life and leadership spanned critical periods in the country’s history.
