Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, has urged northern Nigerians to unite in support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, saying the region has recorded significant benefits from the administration’s development programmes and policies.
Barau made the call on Monday in Kano during the inauguration of a new federal university, where he praised President Tinubu for his “unwavering commitment” to education, infrastructure, and human capital development.
The Deputy Senate President, who represents Kano North Senatorial District, said the establishment of the new university was a testament to the President’s dedication to expanding access to quality education across Nigeria, particularly in the northern region.
“We are here today to celebrate the establishment of this new university and to give financial support to our students,” Barau said. “We must also thank President Tinubu, who approved the creation of this university and signed all the necessary laws to make it a reality.”
He explained that the institution, initially established as a Federal College of Education, was upgraded to university status under former President Goodluck Jonathan but later downgraded by the previous administration a development he said had negatively impacted the educational progress of the region.
“When I became Deputy Senate President, I took the proposal for the restoration of the university to President Tinubu,” Barau recounted. “Before I could even finish explaining, he immediately gave his approval.”
He further disclosed that the President approved the naming of the university after the late Alhaji Yusuf Maitama Sule, Nigeria’s former Permanent Representative to the United Nations and an eminent northern statesman known for his advocacy of unity and moral leadership.

Barau described the gesture as a reflection of Tinubu’s respect for northern icons and his recognition of their contributions to national development.
“The President’s decision to name this university after the late Maitama Sule shows his regard for the legacy of our great leaders and his commitment to national unity,” he said.
The Deputy Senate President noted that northern Nigeria has benefitted immensely from the Tinubu administration’s development agenda, especially in education, infrastructure, and economic empowerment.
He said the approval of new universities, roads, and agricultural initiatives across the North were clear indicators of the President’s inclusive governance style and his focus on balanced national development.
Barau therefore called on political, traditional, and community leaders across the region to rally behind the President ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“The North has greatly benefited from President Tinubu’s leadership. One good turn deserves another,” he declared. “We must support him when the time comes so that these development strides can continue.”
He also assured that the National Assembly would continue to work closely with the Executive to enact laws that promote education, youth empowerment, and economic stability in the region and across the country.
