The popular African streaming platform, Showmax, is set to shut down operations, with its content being moved to DStv Stream as part of a broader restructuring by MultiChoice.
In a statement, the company confirmed that Showmax titles will begin streaming on DStv Stream from April 1, 2026, ahead of the platform’s official closure on April 30. A dedicated Showmax section will be created within the app to house a curated selection of its most popular originals and fan-favourite shows.
“Showmax Originals and select titles are moving to DStv Stream, where they will live in a dedicated Showmax section within the app. The move ensures award-winning African stories remain widely available after the Showmax service closes on April 30. DStv Stream brings together on-demand entertainment and live TV, including sports, in one streaming destination,” the statement read.
MultiChoice added that the content will be accessible to subscribers on Compact, Compact Plus, and Premium packages, both on satellite and through streaming-only plans via the DStv Stream app.
“Existing Showmax customers will be migrated to DStv Stream on Compact and continue to stream until May 31, 2026 at no extra cost,” the company stated.
The transition is aimed at preserving access to award-winning African productions that defined Showmax’s presence in the streaming space, even after its shutdown.
Reacting to the development, the Chief Executive Officer of MultiChoice Nigeria, Kemi Omotosho, said the move reflects evolving viewing habits and the company’s focus on consolidating its streaming offerings.

“This move reflects DStv’s long-term commitment to streaming, bringing together on-demand entertainment and live television in a single platform designed around how audiences want to watch today,” she said.
She also reaffirmed the company’s commitment to African storytelling.
“Showmax helped unlock a wave of world-class African storytelling. Series like WURA, Flawsome, Cheta M and The Real Housewives of Lagos, along with productions from across the continent, were created through collaboration between MultiChoice’s content teams and local producers.
That commitment to African storytelling does not change,” she added.
