La Liga: Laporta re-elected Barcelona president

Joan Laporta has been re-elected as president of Barcelona, winning over 68% of the vote to secure a further five-year term starting 1 July 2026. His opponent, Victor Font, received nearly 30% of the votes, with the rest void or invalid.

According to BBC Sport on Monday, this will be Laporta’s second consecutive term and fourth overall. He previously led the club from 2003 to 2010, a period highlighted by the appointment of Pep Guardiola as manager.

Following his victory, the 63-year-old declared, “It makes us unstoppable. No one will stop us. Exciting years lie ahead.”

Laporta also pledged to strengthen the first team and complete the Nou Camp redevelopment, emphasising that the club and its members would defend Barcelona “against everything and everyone.”

The election saw a turnout of 42.34%, with almost 48,500 members casting votes.

About 42 per cent of Barcelona members participated in the vote, representing 48,480 ballots.

Laporta held 68.47 per cent after 36,117 votes were counted, while Font had 29.52 per cent.

With 12,363 votes left to count, Laporta’s lead was already decisive.feat shortly after the result became clear.

He told reporters: “We’re sad, we were really hopeful, and it’s a pity – we congratulate Laporta.”

Laporta is set to formally reclaim the presidency in July after stepping down weeks earlier as part of the electoral process.

The election day also saw several Barcelona figures cast their votes following the team’s 5-2 win over Sevilla FC.

Head coach Hansi Flick and members of the first-team squad were among those who attended the voting process.

Former captain Sergio Busquets, three-time women’s Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmatí and former player and coach Xavi Hernández were also among club members who voted.

Voting booths were set up at Camp Nou and across several Catalan cities including Girona, Tarragona and Lleida, as well as in Andorra.

Laporta was seen celebrating before the final votes were counted and later joined Barcelona players in celebration after their emphatic win at Camp Nou.

The lawyer previously served as Barcelona president between 2003 and 2010, a period widely regarded as one of the club’s most successful eras.

During that time, Barcelona won the treble in 2009 under coach Pep Guardiola.

Laporta returned to power in 2021 after promising to keep club legend Lionel Messi at Barcelona, although the move did not materialise as the club faced severe financial difficulties.

Since then, he has overseen controversial financial decisions, including selling portions of future television revenue and club assets to raise funds.

The strategy enabled Barcelona to sign players such as Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha in 2022.

Barcelona have since won LaLiga titles in 2023 and 2025, and under Flick reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals last season for the first time since 2019.

Laporta also faced criticism for supporting the proposed European Super League alongside Florentino Pérez, a project Barcelona eventually withdrew from earlier this year.

During his earlier presidency, Laporta oversaw the arrival of Brazilian star Ronaldinho, the rise of Messi and two UEFA Champions League titles in 2006 and 2009.

Barcelona have faced financial difficulties in recent years but enjoyed a successful season, claiming a domestic treble and leading Real Madrid by four points in La Liga. The club now prepares for the Champions League last-16 second leg against Newcastle United, after a 1-1 draw in the first leg.
