Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has emerged as one of the leading candidates to take over the vacant coaching position at French Ligue 1 club Olympique Marseille.

The Marseille job became available after Roberto De Zerbi left the club by mutual agreement on Tuesday, leaving the team searching for a replacement capable of leading them to domestic and European success.

According to football journalist Lassana Camara, Chelle’s name is among the top contenders, alongside Senegalese coach Habib Beye, who was recently dismissed by French side Stade Rennes. The inclusion of two African coaches highlights the growing recognition of African managerial talent in European football.

Chelle, 48, has significantly raised his profile following his impressive performance with Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where he guided the Super Eagles to a third-place finish. His tactical acumen and ability to motivate players have been widely praised, and this success has brought him international attention.

Currently, Chelle is under contract with the Nigerian Football Federation until January 2027. While no official talks with Marseille have been confirmed, speculation continues that the French club sees him as a strong candidate to rejuvenate the team after De Zerbi’s departure.

If appointed, Chelle would join a growing number of African coaches making their mark in European leagues, further solidifying Nigeria’s reputation for producing top football talent both on and off the pitch.
