Nigeria’s National Economic Council has approved N100 billion for the rehabilitation of training institutions for the police and other security agencies, pending final approval from President Bola Tinubu.

The decision came during NEC’s 154th meeting held virtually on Wednesday, where members also endorsed N2.6 billion for consultancy services tied to the project.

The move followed a presentation by Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, who chairs the committee tasked with assessing the condition of training centres nationwide. He warned that many of the facilities are in dire shape and require urgent intervention.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, who chairs the Council, said the initiative reinforces government’s commitment to strengthening national security through better-equipped personnel. He urged governors to ensure economic reforms translate into visible improvements in daily life for Nigerians, stressing that governance must deliver results, not rhetoric.

“Our task is not to admire problems, but to solve them,” Shettima told the meeting. “Policies must become convincing instruments of change felt in markets, schools, clinics and farms.”

The Council also received updates on the nation’s key accounts: the Excess Crude Account stood at $525,823.39 as of November 2025, the Stabilization Account at N71.6 billion, and the Natural Resources Development Account at N79.2 billion.

On health, the Council reviewed progress in efforts to eradicate variant poliovirus. Nigeria has recorded a 39 percent drop in cases this year, with significant gains in Kano and Katsina. However, new detections in several northern states prompted NEC to push for stronger oversight, secure access for vaccination teams, and renewed engagement by deputy governors and local officials ahead of upcoming immunization campaigns.

Also presented was the report on domestic gas supply. The Minister of Petroleum (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, provided updates on longstanding debts owed to producers, noting that ₦185 billion in validated claims will be settled through royalty deductions following presidential approval. NEC endorsed the measure to secure improved gas supply for power generation and industry.

Council members commended ongoing efforts across security, health, and energy, while stressing the importance of execution that directly improves citizens’ welfare in communities across the country.
