Bayelsa State capital, Yenagoa, witnessed a major political shift on Monday as Vice President Kashim Shettima formally received Governor Douye Diri and his supporters into the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking the governor’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Speaking at the reception held at the Samson Siasia Sports Stadium, Shettima representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu—described Diri’s move as “a rare and redemptive moment” in Nigeria’s democracy, applauding Bayelsans for choosing “national integration over political isolation.” He said the governor’s entry into the ruling party symbolises unity and a shared commitment to national progress.
Shettima hailed Diri as “a son of the creeks” who has consistently demonstrated a commitment to peace, development and the collective interest of the Niger Delta. He assured the governor of full support from the APC leadership and pledged that his defection would be judged not by his past political alignment but by his future contributions to governance and national stability.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio also lauded Diri’s decision, calling it a defining moment for the South-South region and acknowledging his infrastructural efforts in Bayelsa, especially in a terrain with high construction costs. APC National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma further praised the Bayelsa governor, describing his move as courage-driven and in the interest of national unity.
In his remarks, Governor Diri said his defection followed wide consultations, adding that internal challenges within the PDP and a desire to safeguard the interest of Bayelsa influenced his decision.
He dismissed claims that his move would cost him his mandate, stating that the state assembly remains firmly behind him. He pledged continued development and cited the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway a long-standing demand of Ijaw leaders as evidence of President Tinubu’s commitment to the Niger Delta.
Diri emphasised that his defection was not personal but guided by the goal of aligning Bayelsa with “a national leadership that values development and inclusiveness.” The event ended with the APC National Chairman formally presenting the party flag to the governor amid jubilation from party supporters.
Further political realignments are expected in the state in the coming days as the ruling party consolidates its new base in Bayelsa.
