The House of Representatives has resolved to set up a special committee to investigate financial grants amounting to $25 million reportedly advanced to the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The resolution followed a motion raised during Tuesday’s plenary session, where lawmakers expressed concern over the management and accountability of funds disbursed to the football bodies.

Presenting the motion, a member of the House noted that the funds intended to support football development, infrastructure, and welfare programs had not been subjected to sufficient transparency and audit review. The lawmaker argued that with Nigeria’s football sector facing persistent funding and administrative challenges, it was crucial to ensure that grants from both local and international sources were properly utilised.

The House therefore directed the establishment of a Special Investigative Committee to examine the sources, disbursement, and application of the $25 million in grants, and to determine whether the funds were used for their intended purposes.

The committee is also mandated to summon officials of the NFF, representatives of the sports ministry, and relevant stakeholders to provide detailed records and explanations on the utilisation of the grants.

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, emphasised that the probe is aimed at promoting accountability and restoring confidence in the management of Nigerian football. He said the House would not tolerate any form of financial mismanagement or diversion of public or donor funds.

The committee is expected to submit its findings within four weeks for further legislative action.
