Former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman has dismissed a potential fight with Belal Muhammad, saying he is focused solely on regaining his title.
Usman, who reigned from 2019 to 2022, said in a recent interview that facing Muhammad the division’s current No. 1 contender does not align with his championship ambitions. “I’m not chasing names; I’m chasing the belt,” Usman said. “My goal is to get back to the top, not just fight for rankings.”
Muhammad has publicly called for a matchup, claiming it would prove who deserves the next shot at champion Leon Edwards. But Usman, 38, believes that bout offers little value to his comeback.
“I respect Belal, but that fight doesn’t move me closer to the title,” he added. “I want something bigger.”

Usman last fought in October 2023, losing a close decision to Khamzat Chimaev after stepping in on short notice. Despite the defeat, he remains a respected veteran and former pound-for-pound great with wins over Colby Covington, Jorge Masvidal, and Gilbert Burns.
Analysts say his focus on championship bouts reflects his experience and legacy-driven mindset. “Usman wants meaningful fights not placeholders,” said UFC commentator Daniel Cormier.
Muhammad, meanwhile, continues his push for a title shot after an impressive 10-fight unbeaten run. The UFC has yet to confirm his next opponent, but Edwards is expected to defend his belt in early 2026.
