A new dance production titled “Mimi’s Shebeen” is captivating South African audiences by celebrating the life and legacy of legendary singer and activist Miriam Makeba, fondly known as “Mama Africa.”

Created and choreographed by Belgian-Congolese artist Alesandra Seutin, the show blends dance, poetry, and live music to tell the story of Makeba’s journey from apartheid-era South Africa to international fame.

Premiering this week at Johannesburg’s Market Theatre, Mimi’s Shebeen has been hailed as a “bold and emotional tribute” by critics. The production uses traditional African movement fused with contemporary dance to capture Makeba’s activism and artistry.

“Makeba was more than a singer—she was a voice for freedom,” Seutin said. “This piece invites audiences to feel her courage and spirit.”

Audiences have responded with standing ovations, many describing the performance as “transformative.” The production also includes reimagined renditions of Makeba classics such as “Pata Pata” and “Malaika.”

The production is expected to tour Europe and North America in 2026, potentially introducing a new generation to Makeba’s influence on African and world music.

As audiences continue to celebrate her impact, Mimi’s Shebeen stands as a reminder that the spirit of Mama Africa still dances—bold, defiant, and eternal.
