President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended heartfelt condolences to the Catholic Church and the Christian community over the passing of Most Reverend Michael Olatunji Fagun, Bishop Emeritus of the Ekiti Diocese, describing him as a devoted servant of God who lived a life of faith, humility, and service.

In a statement issued on Monday by the Presidency, President Tinubu paid tribute to the late cleric, who passed away at the age of 89, noting his exceptional contributions to the growth of the Catholic Church in Nigeria and his enduring commitment to spreading the gospel.

“Most Reverend Fagun lived for the expansion of the gospel in Nigeria and other parts of the world, taking his evangelism to the grassroots and ensuring that the teaching of God’s word was backed with charity,” the President said.

He praised the late bishop for embodying the virtues of sacrifice, simplicity, and compassion throughout his priestly journey. “Most commendable were the efforts of the priest and polyglot in reflecting the sacrifices, simplicity, and humility of Christ since he was ordained in July 1965 and consecrated a bishop in October 1971. I believe the good works and legacy of Most Reverend Fagun will always be remembered,” Tinubu added.

Born in 1939, Bishop Fagun began his service as Auxiliary Bishop of the old Ondo Diocese from 1971 to 1972 before Pope Paul VI established the Diocese of Ado-Ekiti, where Fagun became its pioneer bishop. His leadership was instrumental in strengthening the faith community, promoting education, and advancing social welfare programs within the Church and local communities.

President Tinubu also extended his sympathies to the Fagun family, the Catholic Diocese of Ekiti, and all who mourn the revered cleric, praying for divine comfort and the repose of his soul.

“May God Almighty receive Reverend Fagun’s soul and grant him eternal rest,” the President prayed.
