Arsenal defender William Saliba has ended speculation over his future by signing a new five-year contract with the North London club, pledging his long-term commitment and expressing confidence that manager Mikel Arteta can help him become one of the best defenders in world football.

The 24-year-old French international, previously linked with Real Madrid, had two years left on his deal, which was set to run until June 2027. However, the new agreement ties him to Arsenal until 2030, underscoring the club’s determination to secure the core of its young squad.

Speaking after the announcement, Saliba paid tribute to Arteta and his backroom staff, crediting them for his development. “The boss is one of the best coaches in the world,” he said. “He has helped me a lot, him and his staff, so I’m so happy to have them as a coach. I’m 24 now, and I think I haven’t reached my peak. I have a lot of things to improve, a lot of things to give to this team, and I know that the coach and the staff will help me to become the best, or one of the best, defenders in the world and win trophies.”

Saliba’s decision is a significant boost for Arsenal, who view the Frenchman as a cornerstone of their defensive line for years to come. Since returning from his loan spell at Marseille in 2022, he has established himself as a key player, helping the Gunners mount consecutive Premier League title challenges against Manchester City. His calmness on the ball, physical dominance, and reading of the game have earned him plaudits as one of the league’s standout defenders.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta welcomed the news, describing Saliba as a crucial figure in the club’s future plans. “William has shown remarkable growth since joining us. He embodies the values of this team—commitment, discipline, and hunger for success. We are delighted he has chosen to continue his journey here,” Arteta said.

The new contract also signals Arsenal’s broader strategy to secure long-term deals for their most talented players. In the past two years, the club has tied down Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Martin Ødegaard, and Gabriel Magalhães, creating a young, ambitious core that Arteta believes can compete at the highest level domestically and in Europe.

For Saliba, the focus now is on delivering silverware. Arsenal narrowly missed out on the Premier League title last season, finishing second to Manchester City for the second consecutive year. But with Champions League football back at the Emirates and a squad filled with youthful energy and experience, optimism remains high.

“I know we are building something special here,” Saliba said. “The fans, the players, the staff—everyone is united. I want to win trophies with this team, and I believe we can achieve big things together.”

The announcement has been met with widespread approval from Arsenal supporters, who have hailed Saliba as the club’s defensive leader for the next generation. For the Gunners, keeping their star defender away from Europe’s elite suitors is another step toward securing long-term success under Arteta’s project.
