The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially appointed Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum as the substantive National Chairman of the party.
The decision was reached during the party’s 102nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Monday in Abuja.
Damagum, who had been serving in an acting capacity since March 2023 following the suspension of former Chairman Iyorchia Ayu, now assumes full leadership of Nigeria’s main opposition party.
The NEC’s endorsement comes just months ahead of the PDP’s scheduled national convention in November 2025, where broader strategic decisions for the 2027 general elections are expected to be mapped out.
In his acceptance remarks, Damagum expressed gratitude to the party’s leadership for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to steer the PDP towards unity, stability, and victory in future elections.

“This is a call to greater service,” Damagum said. “We must work together to reposition the PDP as the trusted alternative for Nigerians.”
The meeting also featured discussions on zoning arrangements ahead of the national convention, ongoing reconciliation efforts across state chapters, and strategies to strengthen the party’s grassroots presence.
Party stakeholders have welcomed the decision, describing it as a step toward restoring internal order and preparing the PDP for effective opposition ahead of 2027.
Damagum’s confirmation is seen as a move to consolidate leadership and build momentum following months of internal wrangling and defections.
The PDP’s National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, administered the oath of office to him.
