Cristian Romero has been named as Tottenham’s new captain after the departure of club legend Son Heung-min.

Son, who had worn the armband for the last two seasons and lifted the Europa League in May as Spurs ended their 17-year wait for a trophy, joined LAFC earlier this month.

Romero, the centre-back of the World Cup winner and two Copa Americas, served as deputy captain–with James Maddison–for two years Ange Postecoglou’s tenure in northern London.

“Today started a new season for us, a really special season for me. Being captain of this amazing club is an extraordinary honor.”

“I arrived here four years ago with one dream, which is to make my name in the club’s history and leave the mark by winning trophies. I managed to make it happen.”

“Now, a new journey lies ahead of us. A beautiful season awaits. Together, we will work hard to revive the joy of the unforgettable day, May 21, 2025.”

“Whatever happens along the way, I only ask for one thing, keep it together. There will be joy and sorrow, but together, nothing is impossible. Come on Spurs,” Romero wrote in a post on X.

Romero was Tottenham’s third captain in the final decade after Hugo Lloris held the role for eight years between 2015 and 2023.

Spurs will face Paris Saint-Germain for the UEFA Super Cup in Udine, Italy, on Thursday, August 14, 2025, early morning WIB, before starting their Premier League campaign against Burnley on Saturday, August 16, 2025.

“I have discussed with Romero and he will be our captain. He is very honored and very happy about it.”

“Leading this great club on the pitch is a great thing and should be a great thing, not only for this UEFA Super Cup, but also for the whole season.”

“I think he has all the right qualities. He leads with his behavior on the pitch, pushes the team forward in everything, and off the pitch he always pushes the team.”

“I also want a lot of players with good leadership figures. Of course, one will wear the armband.”

“However, I would like to have as many leaders as possible, four to five people in leadership groups who can help.”

“I’m the same too, I can’t do everything myself and need great coaching staff around me.”

“I’m going to name the leader group so I have time to evaluate everything,” Frank said in a statement.

Romero joined Spurs from Atalanta in 2021 and has made exactly 100 appearances in the Premier League.

Romero, who captained Spurs in a 1-0 win over Manchester United in the Europa League final. He also wore the captain’s armband in both legs of the semifinals against Bodo/Glimt and a quarter-final away win against Eintracht Frankfurt.

“I had a good conversation with Cuti Romero and he’s going to be our captain,” new Tottenham manager Thomas Frank told the official club website.

“He was very honoured and very happy about it. It’s a big thing and should be to lead this wonderful club out on the pitch, not just for this Super Cup, but also throughout the season.

“I think he has all the right qualities. He leads from his behaviour on the pitch, driving the team forward in every way and outside the pitch he’s always pushing the team.”

Romero was appointed captain in the core line-up 13 times by Postecoglou for the 2024/2025 season.

The 27-year-old was linked with a move from Spurs this summer, but is now ready to play a key role in Frank’s first season at the club.

The Danish head coach confirmed that he would appoint members of the Spurs first team after the close of the transfer market.
