INEC to end phase 1 voter registration Dec 10
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially commenced its Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise for the 2025–2026 electoral cycle, as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.

In a statement shared on its X (formerly Twitter) handle, INEC stated that in‑person registration will commence one week later on August 25.

The exercise will take place across all Local Government Area offices and designated registration centers nationwide. Registration is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday

At a briefing in Makurdi, Professor Sam Egwu, INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner for Benue State, explained that the constitutional mandate calls for the inclusion of all eligible Nigerians, especially those who turned 18 after the 2023 elections, as well as individuals who missed previous registration opportunities due to travel, incarceration, or other reasons.

The CVR exercise will roll out in two phases:

  • Phase 1: Online pre-registration opens on 18 August via the INEC portal cvr.inecnigeria.org.
  • Phase 2: From 25 August, eligible Nigerians can complete in-person registration at INEC Area Offices and designated centres nationwide. The service will be available Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

INEC emphasized that the registration process is free of charge and warned citizens to report any officials who attempt to demand payment. The commission urged Nigerians to take advantage of the opportunity, stating: “Your votes start with registration. Don’t miss your opportunity to register”.

The commission has also introduced enhanced digital systems intended to ease access and decongest registration centres.

The platform provides comprehensive services including new registrations, updates to personal data, transfers between polling units, and replacement of lost or damaged voter cards. Eligible Nigerians who missed previous registration cycles or have newly turned 18 are fully encouraged to participate

Eligible categories include:

  • Individuals newly reaching voting age (18+)
  • Citizens who missed earlier registration
  • Those seeking to replace lost or damaged voter cards
  • Persons needing corrections to existing voter data
  • Voters requesting intra- or inter-state transfers or relocation between polling units or wards.

Special provisions have been made for internally displaced persons (IDPs), with mobile registration centres planned to ensure inclusive participation across crisis-affected areas.
