Suspected suicide bomber killed in Abuja explosion

A suspected suicide bomber was killed by an explosive device on Monday in the nation’s capital, Abuja.

A military source, who pleaded anonymity at the scene of the blast, said the man believed to be a suicide bomber was killed by an explosive contained in a rubber can close to the Mogadishu barracks in Abuja.

At the time of this report, the military personnel, DSS, police and officers of the National Emergency Management Agency were taking inventory of the incident at the location.

However, military authorities present at the scene have raised doubts about the cause of the explosion, suggesting it could have been triggered by a phone device rather than an IED.

The FCT Police Command, in confirming the incident, said it has cordoned off the scene of the “explosion that occurred along the Mararaba-Nyanya bypass on Monday, May 26, 2025, at approximately 2:50 PM.”

The command said the blast prompted an immediate response from the police, who deployed officers from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit to the scene.

One male victim was rescued and rushed to the hospital for medical attention. The police have commenced a comprehensive investigation, including forensic analysis, to determine the exact cause and nature of the explosion.

“We urge members of the public to remain calm and go about their lawful activities without fear, as there is currently no cause for alarm,” said SP Josephine Adeh, Police Public Relations Officer, FCT Police Command.

“Residents are also enjoined to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious persons, objects, or movements to the nearest police station.”

This incident highlights the ongoing security concerns in Nigeria, particularly in the nation’s capital.

Issues of suicide bomb blasts are not a recent phenomenon in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In 2011, at least 18 people lost their lives in an apparent suicide car bombing at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in Abuja.
